Joki Round — Solid Walnut Sculptural Fan-Pedestal Dining Table
The Joki Round is the most architectural piece of the Maison Ilmarinen collection — the one that makes the transition from furniture to built object. From above, it reads as a wide circle of rich walnut, its grain flowing from centre to edge in a single continuous movement, its doucine edge rolling gently downward to confirm the mass of the wood beneath. But it is from the side, and especially from slightly below, that the Joki reveals itself fully.
The pedestal is not a column. It is a gathered sheaf of ten concave ribs — each one milled from solid walnut, each one curved along its full height — that rises from a square base splayed low and wide at floor level, narrows at the waist, and opens again in a broad fan to meet the underside of the plateau. The ribs are carved to a crisp arris at their outer edges and hollowed to a concave channel between them, so that the entire pedestal is simultaneously open and closed: solid walnut, but full of shadow. At the base, the ribs spread apart like the roots of a tree pressed against the ground. At the crown, they converge to press against the plateau above like vaulting ribs against a ceiling.
The monomatière intention is absolute — plateau and pedestal share the same species, the same finish, the same grain colour. There is no metal, no joining element that breaks the material continuum. The only hardware is concealed within the mortise junction between pedestal crown and plateau underside, invisible from every seated angle.

The Joki Round operates where woodcraft and architecture converge. The rib-pedestal form draws simultaneously from Gothic vaulting ribs, the root structures of large trees, and the fluted column of classical architecture — but filtered entirely through the language of solid wood and contemporary milling. It is a table that rewards sustained attention: the more time spent with it, the more the craftsmanship reveals itself.
