The Mahti Dining Armchair — Ebonized Wood Triple-Roll Back in Forest Green Velvet with Bronze Hardware
The Mahti makes no concessions. Three horizontal velvet rolls, stacked and wrapped in deep forest green, sit between two ebonized wood discs at the armrest ends — a dossier that is equal parts furniture and jewellery. The four turned legs in ebonized wood, punctuated by bronze ring hardware at each joint, carry the weight of the piece with the quiet authority of a column. This is a chair that understands ceremony.
"Mahti" means grandeur in Finnish — a deliberate choice for the most formally opulent piece in the Maison Ilmarinen collection. Where other chairs in the catalogue make their statement through materiality or organic form, the Mahti speaks through ornament — controlled, hierarchical, and entirely intentional. The triple-roll back is a reference to the great chairs of the French Art Déco period, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens that removes the gilding and keeps the architecture.
The forest green velvet is the chair's chromatic soul. Against the near-black of the ebonized wood and the warm oxidised bronze of the hardware, it reads as the room's deepest, most saturated note. It is a colour that absorbs light rather than reflecting it — serious, sensuous, and impossible to ignore.
