Taulu Rect — Geometric Marquetry & Brass Cone Pedestal Dining Table
The Taulu Rect is a surface before it is a table. Its plateau is a composition in three materials — ebonised wood, figured burl, and sheet brass — arranged in geometric panels that meet at angles across the full length and width of the rectangle. The black panels anchor the composition. The burl panels — honey-amber, their grain a tight, irregular pattern of eyes and knots — interrupt the black with warmth and geological complexity. The brass panels — satin, flat, reflective at the edges — delineate the geometry with a precision that the wood panels, by nature, can never quite achieve. Together the three materials create a surface that reads differently at different distances: from across the room it is an abstract composition; close-up it is a catalogue of material contrasts.
The base is two truncated cones of solid brass, their proportions wide at the base and narrow at the crown, their surface a satin patina that reads as both industrial and precious — the finish of something made in a foundry but handled by a jeweller. The cones are positioned not at the ends of the table but at the two structural points that the overhanging plateau requires — and their placement creates an asymmetric elevation that shifts as you move around the table.
The Taulu Rect is the most art-influenced piece in the collection — a dining table that operates as a painting lying flat, framed by its own edges and supported by two objects that are themselves complete.
