Holvari Rect — Bronze Cast Arch Base & Stone Inlay Rectangular Dining Table

The Holvari Rect is the most materially complex piece in the Maison Ilmarinen collection — and the one that most openly declares its allegiance to the tradition of the object as argument. The base is a single casting of solid bronze: five arched volumes arranged in a row beneath the plateau, each one a full arch that rises from the floor and returns to it, their outer surfaces smooth and curved, their inner faces expressing the negative space that the casting process naturally produces. The bronze has been given an antique patina — dark, warm, with the irregular oxidation that only genuine bronze develops over time. No two pieces will be identical in their patination.

The plateau is a wide rectangle of dark honed stone — slate or blackened granite — into whose surface two large disc inlays have been set flush: one a full circle of lighter stone with a faint concentric ring carved into its surface, one a similar disc with a spiral relief. The inlays are set at the two positions where guests most naturally place their gaze during a long dinner — not at the centre, not at the ends, but at the two points of visual rest that a rectangular table naturally creates. They function as both ornament and orientation, as both surface and symbol.

The Holvari Rect positions itself at the intersection of dining table and sculptural object. It is the piece in the collection for the client who collects furniture the way they collect art — for its formal intelligence, its material commitment, and its irreproducibility.
