Varjo Rect — Glass & Painted Steel Dining Table

The Varjo Rect exists in the space between furniture and installation. A single plane of clear tempered glass — almost imperceptibly thin from the side, edge-polished to near-invisibility — rests atop three U-shaped steel portiques painted in a deliberate chromatic progression: deep navy, dusty rose, warm terracotta. The glass does not impose. The base does not support quietly. Together, they argue.

The decision to use a clear top is architectural. The portiques become the table — not the surface. Diners seat themselves inside a colour field, aware at every angle of the painted steel structure below and around the glass plane. Viewed from across the room, the table reads as pure geometry and colour. Viewed from the seat, it reads as transparency and weight in dialogue.

Each portique is a single-welded U-form of square-section steel, powder-coated in a matte satin finish. The three portiques are positioned asymmetrically beneath the glass — not equidistant — which prevents the composition from resolving into symmetry. This is intentional. Symmetry would have made it a product. Asymmetry makes it a position.

The Varjo Rect is the most conceptually legible piece in the Maison Ilmarinen collection. It is for the buyer who collects design as seriously as they collect art, and who understands that the two are not always different things.  It is the only piece in the Maison Ilmarinen collection that belongs as naturally in a gallery context as in a residential one. The tri-tone colour progression places it firmly in the colour field design movement — design objects that treat colour as the primary material, not the finish.
