Kielo Rect — Burl Veneer & Chrome-Brass Extendable Dining Table

The Kielo Rect is the only piece in the Maison Ilmarinen collection that allows itself glamour. Where the rest of the catalogue speaks in the quiet registers of oak, teak, marble, and linen-white lacquer, the Kielo speaks differently — in the amber swirl of book-matched burl veneer lacquered to a mirror finish, and in the cold precision of a chrome and brass trestle frame that catches every shift of light in the room.

The plateau is a wide rectangle of matched burl veneer — mappa or thuya, depending on selection — its surface alive with the tight, concentric rings that characterise figured wood at its most extreme. Two or more sheets of veneer are book-matched across the seam, so the pattern mirrors itself from centre to edge. The lacquer applied over this surface is high-gloss polyester, polished to eliminate any distinction between the veneer below and the surface above. The result is a plateau that reads as one continuous piece of amber glass.

The base is a rectangular trestle in square-section tubular steel, chrome-plated on the verticals and the top rails, with polished brass caps at each corner joint. The brass cap is the detail — machined, substantial, and precisely placed at the point where two chrome tubes meet. It is a small element and it changes everything, translating a base that might otherwise read as industrial into one that reads as jewellery. In its extended configuration, a butterfly leaf mechanism opens the plateau at the centre seam, revealing a matched veneer insert stored within the base apron. The extension is seamless: the pattern continues across the join.

The Kielo Rect draws from the American and Italian glamour modernism of the 1960–70s — the moment when chrome, brass, and figured veneers converged in a furniture vocabulary that was simultaneously rigorous and luxurious. The chrome-and-brass trestle base is the formal grammar of that era, distilled to its most precise expression.  It pairs most naturally with upholstered seating in deep velvets or bouclé, and with interiors that include at least one mirror surface or brass accent.
