stone-dining-table-arpi
Arpi — Stone & Brass Dining Table

Arpi, Finnish for scar, is a dining table built on the idea behind kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken ceramics with gold. A single slab of stone is traced with a network of fine brass seams, as if it had cracked into petals and been made whole again. The fracture is not hidden; it becomes the drawing.

The top is an organic oval of solid travertine, filled and honed to a smooth, closed surface. Each brass seam is a solid strip set flush into a groove cut in the stone, perfectly level with it: the hand glides over the joint without feeling it, and nothing can catch in it. Where the seams reach the rim, they fold over the edge and run down its face. Below, three tall faceted legs carved from solid walnut give the stone a warm, sculptural base.

The pattern is drawn by hand for every table, so no two are alike. In Travertine & Walnut, warm gold lines cross ivory stone. In Nero & Fumed Oak, they run across black Nero Marquina marble on smoky fumed oak legs, for an evening dining room.

Construction

The 4 cm stone top is bonded to a concealed triangular steel frame. The three legs are set wide toward the edges of the top for stability, bolt to steel plates and detach for delivery. A construction drawing is included in the gallery.

Specifications

Sizes: 8 seats, about 240 x 110 cm · 10 seats, about 280 x 120 cm · height 75 cm

Finishes: Travertine & Walnut (ivory travertine, solid walnut legs) · Nero & Fumed Oak (Nero Marquina marble, solid fumed oak legs)

Top: solid stone, 4 cm, filled and honed, organic oval outline

Inlay: solid brass strips, about 4 mm wide, set flush, drawn by hand for each table

Legs: three faceted legs in laminated solid wood, adjustable levellers

Estimated weight: about 300 kg (8 seats) and 380 kg (10 seats)

The stone is sealed before delivery.
